General Mills Launches 'Bake for New Orleans' Fundraiser

MINNEAPOLIS -- General Mills here will donate $5 for every bag of Pillsbury Danish Mix bought by bakeries to help re-invigorate New Orleans' baking industry.

The promotion runs from Jan. 23 to March 10, and up to $25,000 will be donated to the Retail Bakery Industry Foundation's "Rebuild New Orleans" campaign. The donation will be used to offset the start-up costs of replacing the infrastructure needed to start baking again.

According to Mark Atwood, president of the Retail Bakery Industry Foundation, "Over 50 bakeries in New Orleans were destroyed."

Pillsbury Danish Mix is a key ingredient in "King Cakes," a New Orleans bakery tradition during Mardi Gras. King Cakes are braided and decorated in the Mardi Gras colors -- purple, green and gold -- and contain a special surprise, such as a bean, pea or coin to signify good luck.
