FreshDirect's IT Risk-taking Earns Tech Aw

NEW YORK -- FreshDirect yesterday was named a recipient of the 2005 CIO 100 award, an annual award program by IDG's CIO magazine that recognizes organizations around the world that demonstrate a high level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology.

The theme for this year's award is the "Bold 100," which recognized executives and organizations who embraced great risk for the sake of great reward.

"Information technology plays an extremely important role in every facet of our business," said Myles Trachtenberg, c.t.o. of FreshDirect. "It's an honor to be recognized not only as innovative, but as a company that is taking the right chances at the right time to achieve the maximum pay off."

According to CIO magazine, among the bold steps taken by FreshDirect IT, was a redesign of its systems to accommodate huge usage pattern swings with shorter supply chains, value-added processing systems and more efficient order aggregation.

The online grocer also reconceptualized its business model to be less an e-retailer and more a fresh food provider, according to CIO.
