Food Lion Earns EPA's Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion said yesterday it will be honored on March 15 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with the Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for its outstanding and continued leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy management.

The Sustained Excellence Award is presented to a select group of companies from thousands that participate in the Energy Star program. The award recognizes Food Lion's ongoing leadership in using energy efficiently in its operations and integrating energy efficiency into its overall organizational strategy. Food Lion earned the same award in 2004.

Food Lion, an Energy Star partner since 1998, is being honored for its longtime commitment to intelligent energy management practices and investments. Since 2000, through new lighting, refrigeration, and heating and cooling technologies and company-wide energy management efforts, Food Lion has reduced its energy use by more than 1.62 trillion Btu. In 2004, Food Lion saved 415 billion Btu and cut its natural gas consumption by nearly 18 percent. The company reduced its water consumption by more than 5 percent.

Food Lion said last December that more than 200 of its stores had earned the prestigious Energy Star designation from the EPA. The Energy Star label means these Food Lion stores are some of the most energy-efficient retail facilities in the United States. Food Lion plans to add 200 more Energy Star stores in 2005 through benchmarking, renovations, and new construction.
