Food Lion Discloses Locations of Store Closings
SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion on Monday disclosed the locations of 41 money-losing stores in 10 states that it plans to close by the end of January. The closings will affect about 1,500 employees, the company said.
"These stores are not generating sufficient revenue to cover operational expenses," said Rick Anicetti, president and chief executive of Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion. "It is not financially responsible to keep them open."
The closings include five stores in North Carolina, four in South Carolina, 15 in Tennessee, two in Virginia, one in West Virginia, two in Florida, five in Georgia, two in Kentucky, two in Maryland and three in Pennsylvania, company officials said.
On Thursday, Food Lion announced the elimination of 400 jobs in its corporate office, distribution centers, transportation and field management. Those cuts, which are not part of the 1,500 job cuts announced on Monday, will be completed by Aug. 1, the company said.
Food Lion also plans to open 45 new stores in 2003, the company said.
There are currently 1,228 Food Lion stores in 11 states in the Middle Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the country, including 584 in the Carolinas.
Delhaize Group -- the Belgium-based owner of Food Lion, Kash n' Karry and Hannaford Bros. grocery companies -- also plans to close one Kash n' Karry store by the end of the month, but the location of that store was not announced.
