Dollar General to Open 8,000th Store
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- The dollar store movement keeps on moving. Dollar General Corp. here said it is opening its 8,000th store, in Mission, Texas, on March 3. With this milestone, Dollar General claims to be the retailer with the largest number of company-owned and company-operated stores in the United States.

Dollar General opened its first store in 1955. In recent years the dollar store retailer has unveiled a grocery-heavy format, Dollar General Market, which it has been gradually expanding after a successful test run.
Family Dollar Stores, Inc., another well-known dollar store retailer, said last week that it has opened its 6,000th store, located in Joliet, Ill.
