CVS Introduces Disposable Digital Camera
WOONSOCKET, R.I. – Late last week CVS/pharmacy here became the first national retailer to offer a disposable digital camera to its customers.
The private label cameras are manufactured for CVS by San Francisco-based Pure Digital Technologies. The camera is billed as the first one-time-use camera with a picture preview function, offering a color 1.4-inch LCD screen, providing consumers with a complete digital photography experience, including instant view finding and retaking of shots in an easy-to-use, worry-free, point-and-shoot format.
Each camera takes 25 shots. Built with advanced sharing software, the photo CD requires no installation and includes its own e-mail system to simplify e-mail photo sharing. Even first-time computer users can easily share photos, slideshows, and create and send greeting cards. The cameras are made in China.
The model with the picture-preview and delete functions retails for $19.99, while the model with a delete feature retails for only $9.99. Processing, including prints, index print, and photo CD, is another $9.99. The cameras must be returned to CVS for processing.

As of last week, the cameras were available in 1,000 CVS stores, and by Christmas they will be available in over 3,000 units.
"We don't have any other announcements right now with other retailers, but it is available as a private label item," Wynne Ahern, a Pure Digital Technologies spokeswoman, told Progressive Grocer.
