C&S Subsidiary to Close Down in Baltimore County

HALETHORPE, Md. -- Ocean Logistics, LLC, a subsidiary of Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. said yesterday this week that it has negotiated a severance package with three union locals representing 311 employees at a distribution center here, according to a published report. The facility, which serves Super Fresh stores in Maryland and neighboring states, will close by April 28. The facility employs a total of 369 workers, all of whom will lose their jobs.

Unionized employees will get severance pay, health care benefits, and transitional services provided by state and local officials. Additionally, the 58 nonunion employees will receive a severance package, according to Ocean Logistics.

The company is shutting down the distribution center because it's inefficient, said C&S s.v.p. Carl Wistreich told the Baltimore Sun. "In our business where margins are calculated on the pennies and not dollars, we are forced to consider every alternative that will assist us in remaining competitive," noted Wistreich. C&S acquired the facility as part of a larger transaction with A&P last summer.

Work will be transferred early next month to one of C&S' three other facilities in Maryland, although Wistreich didn't identify which one.

Teamsters Locals 570 and 355 and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 27 attempted through negotiations to keep the facility open, but after that bid failed turned to working out a severance package acceptable to both sides.
