CGA Educational Foundation Sees Record Number of Scholarship Applications

The California Grocers Association Educational Foundation (CGAEF) has received a record 1,070 applications from 70 member companies for its 2009-2010 College Scholarship Program.

Applicants from more than 70 member companies submitted an application to be considered for college scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000. The foundation is offering $326,000 of scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year, a new benchmark for the program.

“The record number of applicants reflects not only the growing interest in the program, but [also] the challenges students are facing in financing their college education,” said Brianne Korte, manager of the Sacramento-based foundation.

Since awarding its first college scholarship in 1998, the foundation has awarded 1,335 scholarships totaling nearly $1.5 million. Scholarships are open to high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are employees or employee dependents of CGA member companies.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, evidence of outstanding character, and leadership potential. Applicants must be planning to enroll as full-time college students in the fall of 2009 at an accredited, nonprofit college or university in the United States. All scholarships are one-time awards.

“We express sincere gratitude to all those that contribute funds to make this program possible.” said Ronald Fong, CGAEF president.

College scholarship recipients will be announced in June.
