Carrefour Names Largest Stakeholder Chairman

LEVALLOIS, France - European retailer Carrefour's Supervisory Board yesterday nominated Robert Halley as chairman to replace Luc Vandevelde, who resigned, while French billionaire Bernard Arnault and Colony Capital bought 9.8 percent of the retailer, raising speculation that it is a takeover target.

According to published reports, Halley's family is Paris-based Carrefour's biggest investor, and had removed Vandevelde as head of their holding company last month after disagreeing over strategy.

In a company statement, Carrefour's board reaffirmed its confidence in the management board and president Jose Luis Duran to continue the strategy which has been developed for two years, according to a statement.
