Canada’s Calgary Co-op Installs Self-checkout Chain-wide

Calgary Co-operative Association Limited (Calgary Co-op) this week completed a chain-wide rollout of self-checkout units, in an effort to boost customer service and shopper satisfaction even in the face of labor shortages.

The cooperative grocer worked with StoreNext dealer AM/PM Service to integrate the new Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout units with its existing StoreNext’s ISS45 point-of-sale systems.

“Our stores are seeing an increasing number of customers using the self-checkout lanes,” said Donna Burn, v.p. of member and public relations for Calgary Co-op. “This has taken pressure off of our staffed checkout lanes during a time when Calgary is experiencing continuing labor shortages.”

In each store, Calgary Co-op replaced one or two of its standard checkout lanes (its average store has 20 or 21) with four U-Scan self-checkout units in each of its 22 food centers.

Calgary Co-op is a locally owned and operated retail co-operative, with more than 425,000 members, 4,000 employees, $352 million in assets and annual sales of $998 million. It operates 22 grocery stores, 22 pharmacies, 26 gas stations, nine travel offices, and 15 liquor stores in Calgary, Airdrie, Strathmore, and Okotoks, Alberta.
