Big Y Names Ops VP

The board of directors of Big Y Foods Inc. has appointed Richard D. Bossie VP of store operations, succeeding William Hogan, who has retired.

In his new role, Bossie will continue to oversee all store, customer service, workforce management operations for all 77 Big Y stores including the company’s World Class Markets, supermarkets, Fresh Acres Specialty Market, Table and Vine wine and liquor division, and Big Y Express Gas and Convenience locations. He will also oversee the execution of sales initiatives, staffing, store conditions, customer service, expense control and profitability for the company. He reports to President and COO Charles L. D’Amour.

Bossie began his career in the supermarket industry in 1981 as a part-time service clerk at D&A Super market in Palmer, Alaska. Five years later, he joined Big Y as a part-time grocery clerk in its Great Barrington, Mass., store. In 1988, he became a full-time grocery clerk, rising to assistant grocery manager and, in 1993, grocery manager. Later that same year, Bossie was accepted into Big Y’s store manager training program in which he gained experience in every store department. In 1994, he became store manager of Big Y’s Torrington, Conn., store and went on to manage five other Big Y locations in that state. By 2006, he had joined the operations team as a sales and merchandising mentor assisting the marketing and operations departments with weekly sales, merchandising and training opportunities within one district for the chain until 2010, when he became a district director and, a year later, director of operations.

One of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y operates 80 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 70 supermarkets, 39 pharmacies, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors, and five Big Y Express gas and convenience locations, employing a total of more than 11,000 employees.
