Big Y Aids Red Cross Nepal Earthquake Disaster Relief

Big Y Foods Inc. has joined the American Red Cross’ relief response to the recent Nepal earthquake, with a chain-wide in-store donation program running through May 17.

For the duration of the campaign, customers and employees can donate to the Red Cross' Nepal relief efforts by placing money in containers located at the registers in all Big Y stores.

"When businesses like Big Y World Class Market partner with the American Red Cross, disaster awareness and relief efforts are multiplied," said Kimberly Goulette, executive director for the American Red Cross of Western Massachusetts. "The fundraising efforts by Big Y and their customers go directly to help those most in need."

The American Red Cross has teamed with the Nepal Red Cross and other international chapters to rush support to Nepal, including financial contributions to support relief operations, and sending communications experts and satellite equipment to facilitate repairs to the country's infrastructure.

Past disaster relief initiatives at Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y include campaigns to send aid in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquakes in both Japan and Haiti. The grocer’s 10-plus-year partnership with the Red Cross has raised more than $400,000.
