Automated Convenience Store to Open in New York State This Week

CANTON, Mass. -- All Seasons Services, based here, one of the largest independent providers of dining, vending, and office refreshment services, will open its first Shop24 automated convenience store in the United States at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, N.Y. on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Shop24 provides 24-hour access to 200 items, among them milk, a six-pack of soda, batteries, iPOD download cards, and stomach remedies, in a freestanding self-service outdoor unit. Offering multiple payment options, including credit cards, and a keypad for the user to enter a shopping list, "Shop24 is a revolutionary new concept that is expected to change convenience retailing on college and business campuses and on main street nationwide," according to a statement from All Seasons.

The opening ceremony, which will take place 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will feature a ribbon cutting; remarks by Morrisville State College president Raymond Cross, Morrisville Auxiliary Corp. g.m. Glenn Gaslin, and All Seasons c.e.o. John Hotchin; and a New York state proclamation presented by State Senator David J. Valesky and Assemblyman William Magee, among other events.

Morrisville State, the only test college in the country for the Shop24 technology, will be surveyed on item preferences. The Shop24 structure is durable, with three inches of bulletproof glass. It has also been climate-tested in Northern Europe, where it was able to withstand harsh weather. The unit features refrigeration.

Shop24 units have been installed in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, and have recorded more than 60 million consumer transactions in 160 locations across Europe, according to Shop24's Web site. Shop24 is owed by VTL Group, Ltd., an Auckland, New Zealand-based company.

All Seasons Services says that it plans to place more Shop24 units with remote monitoring capability in other locations across the United States.
