Asda Reports Biggest-Ever Trading Day Before Christmas
LONDON - Wal-Mart-owned Asda said Friday that it had an "excellent" Christmas with its biggest-ever trading day on Dec. 23.
The U.K. retailer said it gained an additional 800,000 customers since last Christmas, giving it well over 9 million customers each week.
Asda said it maintained the strong sales momentum it achieved all year. The retailer said its non-food departments had record-breaking sales, with the George clothing line maintaining its excellent performance.
The Asda Wal-Mart supercentres at Minworth near Sutton Coldfield and Havant became the first Asda stores to achieve GBP 4 million in sales in a single week (the final seven days trading before Christmas).
In the same period, an additional 13 stores notched up sales greater than GBP 3 million and almost 100 reached the GBP 2 million mark or over, Asda said.
