Asda to Recruit 10,000 Permanent Holiday Workers

LONDON - Wal-Mart-owned Asda, Britain's second-biggest supermarket chain, has said it is changing its approach to staffing over the busiest periods of the year by recruiting 10,000 permanent staff to work as little as 10 weeks a year.

The company said today that the staff would mainly be required to work around Easter, Christmas and during the summer holidays. The plan was designed to cut recruitment costs, it added.

Asda said it would target people aged over 50. It already employs more than 22,000 people aged over 50, and said an earlier drive to hire older workers had improved customer service and driven down employee turnover.

The contract for new Asda staff will stipulate an annual, rather than weekly, number of hours to be worked.
