ASDA to Create 1,250 Distribution Jobs
LONDON - British supermarket chain ASDA, owned by Wal-Mart, today said it will create 1,250 new jobs for drivers and warehouse workers because of customer demand, Reuters reports.
The new positions add to 10,000 extra jobs already planned for this year.
"We're sending out more product than we had planned every single week, and there's no sign of the pace letting up," distribution director David Gibbons said in a statement.
About 250 jobs would be created at a new general merchandise distribution center in Lutterworth, due to open this month. Another 300 people would be employed at a new clothing distribution base at a location still to be announced, due to open in September.
A further 500 warehouse staff and 200 drivers would be recruited for 21 distribution centres across Britain, the company said.
ASDA, which employs about 120,000 people, last week announced plans to open eight new stores in the UK during the remainder of 2002 and to create some seven giant supercenter stores. It now has 253 stores.
