America’s Food Basket Selects Supervalu as Wholesaler

America’s Food Basket (AFB) selected Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Supervalu to serve as wholesaler and supplier for its 47 co-op stores in New York and parts of New England. The long-term agreement will provide AFB member stores with traditional grocery products as well as Supervalu’s private label products. Supervalu also will distribute AFB’s Ideal Brands items.

AFB stores range in size from 5,000 to nearly 20,000 square feet and operate under three primary banners: American’s Food Basket, Ideal Food Basket and Superfi Emporium.

AFB, based in Lake Success, N.Y., and established in 2007, has experienced its fourth year of growth, according to CEO Dan Cabassa. The co-op is “seeking opportunities to build our business by exploring new avenues for operational excellence,” he added. “We’re pleased to announce this relationship with Supervalu as we believe it will help us deliver a great offering for our shoppers.”

The first AFB stores will transition to Supervalu in December 2016 with the majority of the stores making the move in the first quarter of 2017.

“America’s Food Basket is a terrific regional co-op that delivers a great neighborhood grocery experience for its customers,” said Mike Stigers, EVP of Supervalu’s wholesale business. “Our plans to continue to grow Supervalu’s wholesale business took another step forward today with the addition of America’s Food Basket.”
