Albertson's Expands Online Grocery Service to San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Albertson's Inc. has expanded its full-service online grocery ordering and shopping operation, Albertsons.com, to San Diego, giving consumers the option of home delivery or pick-up of their grocery order at their neighborhood Albertson's store.

Albertson's already offers the online service to customers in the Seattle, Washington area. The company now sees greater San Diego County as a strong follow-on market for this service, based upon the region's need for time-saving alternatives to everyday tasks such as grocery shopping.

"We're really proud of the success Albertsons.com has achieved in Seattle, and we anticipate a strong response in San Diego," said Charla Giles, vice president of San Diego area, Albertson's.

With the click of a mouse at www.Albertsons.com, customers can order any item available in an Albertson's store. Once an order is sent from the customer's computer, it is forwarded to one of Albertson's five local fulfillment stores where it is checked by a personal "e-shopper." The e-shopper then selects all items on the customer's list, carefully reviewing the order for accuracy.

All products ordered through Albertsons.com will be available at the same everyday low prices available in Albertson's stores. Customers may choose to have their order scheduled for delivery to their home or office within a 1 1/2 hour window, or they can have their order packaged and ready for pick-up at any of Albertson's 38 stores in San Diego County. Orders placed by 10:00 a.m. will be available for pick-up after 5:00 p.m. same day; orders placed by midnight will be delivered or available for pick up the next day. The cost of the convenient service is just $9.95 for door-to-door delivery, and $5.95 for pick-up.

Albertson's believes that unlike past online grocery services which failed to turn a profit, its "click and mortar" strategy builds upon its retail capabilities in the most cost-effective, efficient way.
