Albertsons Adds Three Bay Area Safeways

Albertsons Companies Inc. will open three new Safeway stores in the San Francisco Bay Area Sept. 14, including locations in Pacifica at The Fairmont Shopping Center, Oakland at The Ridge Shopping Center, and Walnut Creek at The Orchards at Walnut Creek.

The new stores will showcase local items and organic products with shelf tags and other signage. In addition to partnerships with produce grocers, other local products Safeway will highlight include Cal-Organic Farms, Clover Stornetta Dairy Farms from Petaluma, free-range Rocky Chicken from Sonoma County and Three Twins Ice Cream from Petaluma. Among the organic products, hundreds will be under Safeway’s USDA-certified O Organics private label.

Around the perimeter, the stores will house full-service fresh-focused departments. Among them will be a full-service butcher block offering a variety of USDA Choice quality beef cuts, with butchers on hand to discuss custom cuts, share cooking techniques and cut and prepare anything to order; and a full-service deli with an extensive line of Boar’s Head premium deli meat and cheeses, a range of freshly prepared meals, made-to-order sandwiches, and ready-to-serve soups, green salads, grab-and-go meals and more. Floral designers also will offer a wide assortment of fresh flowers and plants, as well as home décor items.

As for alcoholic beverages, the stores will offer hundreds of wine varietals, including local options from the South Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains, an assortment of liquor and craft and locally brewed beers. Shoppers who purchase any six bottles of wine or liquor will save an additional 10 percent every day.

Additional services at the Oakland and Walnut Creek stores will include a pharmacy, Starbucks and a large selection of bulk foods.

Bay Area residents without the time to physically shop any of the new stores will be able to use Safeway’s grocery delivery program, which offers one-hour delivery windows, a “Shop by History” feature that saves all previously purchased items for easy repeat purchasing, and free delivery on the first order.

To celebrate the openings, six local nonprofit organizations – Oakland Promise, Prescott Joseph Center for Community Enhancement, White Pony Express, Partners in Educational Achievement, Pacifica Resource Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Pacifica – will receive a $2,500 charitable contribution from The Safeway Foundation during the store opening festivities Sept. 14-15. A brief presentation will take place in the floral department of each store with business and community leaders, as well as Safeway management, in attendance.
