Ahold Closing 9 Va. Martin’s Stores

Ahold USA will close nine Martin’s Food Markets in Virginia that aren’t being sold to Publix Super Markets, according to a published report. Eight stores are in the Richmond, Va., area and one is in Williamsburg, and they will shut their doors permanently in July and August.

“Throughout this difficult process, our top concern has been to take care of our associates and treat them fairly and with respect,” said Giant/Martin’s President Tom Lenkevich. “We know our associates’ continued dedication to our customers will provide excellent service in the coming weeks. We are also making a best-in-class commitment to take care of our people with a strong severance package.”

Martin’s revealed previously that another store, in Virginia's Chesterfield County, will close June 30 when the store lease expires, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Ahead of its Virginia debut this year, Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix is purchasing 10 Martin’s stores, seven of which have already closed for renovations, according to the newspaper.

In 2010, Ahold bought the Richmond-area Ukrop’s Super Markets chain and converted its stores to the Martin’s banner. When Ahold and Delhaize merged in 2016, federal antitrust regulators required stores to be sold off in markets where their business overlapped, at which time the Richmond-area Martin’s locations were put up for sale.
