AFM Members Enjoy Cash Rebates

Affiliated Foods Midwest Cooperative enjoyed another record-breaking year with $55.5 million in cash patronage rebates provided to its members.

The milestone was among the topics of discussion at AFM's 82nd annual Fall Food Show, held Sept. 12-14 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

Comparative sales increased 1.5 percent, while members experienced record rebates surpassing 5 percent of purchases and the average annual retailers’ rebate increased to 4.75 percent of purchases without any margin increases for many years. Operating expenses were reduced from the prior year as AFM continues to excel at warehouse efficiencies.

Motivational speaker Harold Lloyd addressed participants Friday morning with information to better assess their ability to win the battle for market share, profits or simply survival.

Awards were presented to members on Friday at the Retailer Awards Reception in recognition of growth and performance during the 2012-13 fiscal year. In addition, Dole Fresh was recognized as the 2013 Vendor of the Year in honor of its partnership with the cooperative.

Mark Thomas of Macon, Mo., was elected to AFM's board of directors at Saturday’s annual shareholders meeting, while John Clarke of Mitchell, S.D., was named chairman of the board and Jim Zyrowski of Brown City, Mich., was named vice chairman. Members of the AFM Executive Committee include Clarke, Zyrowski and Carmen Diehl of Upton, Wyo.
