ACNielsen Survey: Aldi Is Europe's Strongest Retail Brand

ESSEN, Germany -- Aldi Group, Germany's biggest discount-food retailer, is the strongest retail brand among European consumers, according to a European Shopper Trends survey conducted by ACNielsen.

Aldi, which has more than 5,000 stores worldwide -- including more than 700 in 26 U.S. states -- was rated the highest of 57 European retailers measured in the survey. About 47 percent of German shoppers said they have an Aldi store within one kilometer of their home.

Shoppers' priorities vary between countries, according to ACNielsen. For Britons, one-stop shopping is the most important consideration, while for Italians it's long opening hours. In Spain, consumers most want value for money, and the Dutch seek convenience above all else, the survey of 6,000 people said.

The European Shopper Trends survey was conducted in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Austria in the summer of 2004.
