16 Harris Teeter Stores Get Energy Star Approval
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Harris Teeter here appears to be on the way to reaching its goal of becoming an "Energy Star Leader" by the summer of 2007, with 16 of its stores recently earning the prestigious Energy Star designation for superior energy performance and management.
To earn the Energy Star label, the retailer must achieve a company-wide benchmark rating of 75 or greater, or demonstrate significant portfolio-wide score improvements above an established baseline.
Harris Teeter said it has benchmarked its portfolio and is currently making energy efficient changes in all stores. Of those 16 stores already hitting the mark, seven are located in the Charlotte, N.C. metro area; two are in Wilmington, N.C.; and one each are in the following markets: DC metro, Virginia Beach, Va.; Charlottesville, Va.; Carrboro, N.C.; Burlington, N.C., Kernersville, N.C. and Durham, N.C.
Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and consumers protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. In addition to fostering superior energy performance of individual buildings, the Environmental Protection Agency also encourages organizations to achieve energy efficiency improvements of 10 percent or more across an organization's entire portfolio of buildings.
In other Harris Teeter news, the company said it will participate in the Sunkist "Take a Stand" program on July 8 to raise money for a local charity.
In its third year, the Sunkist "Take a Stand" program empowers kids to make a difference in their local communities by providing them with free lemonade stands, if they pledge to raise money for a charity of their choice.
This year, the children of Harris Teeter associates will sell cups of fresh-squeezed lemonade to help raise money for the United Way. Last year, Harris Teeter raised more than $1 million for the United Way through associate and customer support.
Harris Teeter operates 149 stores in the six-state area of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. The retailer is owned by Ruddick Corp.
