Lidl Buying Land in Texas: Report

Amid reports that German hard-discount grocer Lidl has moved up its entry into the United States – now expected this summer – is planning locations all along the East Coast, and has expressed interest in expanding into Ohio, the company has begun seeking approvals from local cities and purchasing land in north Texas ahead of its eventual move into the Lone Star State, according to a published report.

The Dallas News reports that Lidl has either bought land or instigated planning and zoning requests in Frisco, McKinney, Little Elm, North Richland Hills, Rockwall and Wylie. An additional site in southwest Dallas is also in the offing, the newspaper noted, citing county records disclosing that to date, the grocer has spent more than $10 million on land purchases in the region.

Last fall, the company acknowledged that it was looking for store sites in Texas.

Lidl’s first 20 U.S. stores are slated to debut this summer in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, with 100 stores expected to be operating by the end of the year.
