Winn-Dixie Using 'Homegrown' Fruit in Store-brand Frozen Treat
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is paying tribute to a locally grown fruit in its latest ice cream flavor. The retailer is using strawberries from Plant City, Fla., which is considered the winter strawberry capital of the world, in its newest Prestige Ice Cream flavor: Plant City Strawberry Ice Cream.
The new variety features 50 percent more chunks of fresh strawberries than the original, according to Winn-Dixie.
"Winn-Dixie is committed to supporting the communities we serve in every way we can," said Terry Derreberry, Winn-Dixie director of neighborhood marketing, in a statement. “That commitment extends to purchasing and selling locally grown products as much as possible.”
The new flavor debuted at the end of January, and will likely be offered through the summer.
Plant City Strawberry is one of 10 new flavors recently introduced through Winn-Dixie's premium private label, Prestige brand. Additional flavors include Banana Pudding, Neapolitan, Cherry Cordial, Strawberry Cheesecake, Toffee Caramel, Birthday Cake, Raspberry Cone Crunch, Cinnamon Caramel Crunch, and Blueberry Cream Pie.
