Winn-Dixie, Harris Teeter Giving Flu Shots

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. and Harris Teeter will both offer flu shots starting Wednesday.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie’s flu vaccinations will be given on a walk-in basis and through vaccine clinics at all 379 of its in-store pharmacies. Customers who present their Winn-Dixie Customer Reward Card will receive a $5 discount off the $28 flu vaccine.

This year, the grocer’s pharmacies will also dispense a new, high dosage flu vaccine for those 65 and older at a cost of $43 with the Customer Reward Card (a $5 discount). Both the regular and high-dose flu vaccines protect against the H1N1 (“swine flu”) virus.

“Winn-Dixie strives to provide healthy and easy choices for our customers,” said Robin Miller, the company’s director of communications. “Besides the convenience of in-store vaccinations, offering these vaccines at competitive rates will save our customers and their health insurers more than $2 million.”

Certified pharmacists will administer the flu vaccines, and no appointment is necessary. For a list of dates, times and locations of flu clinics, shoppers can visit http://winn-dixie.com/Store_Locations/search.asp and type in their city and state or ZIP code.

The Southeastern grocer, which operates 514 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi, is additionally providing an off-site clinic service for area businesses to boost 2010 vaccination rates.

Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter will work with Mollen Immunization Clinics to provide flu shots in all 199 of its stores for at least two four-hour periods. Flu shots will be available to all Harris Teeter customers for $25 each with their VIC card, or free if they are Medicare Part B, non-HMO recipients. This year, for the first time, is the option for the clinic nurse to bill insurances directly; all shoppers need do is ask whether your provider is included. The pneumococcal vaccine will also be available for $60.

Registered nurses employed by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Mollen will give the shots in temporary clinics set up within Harris Teeter stores. Clinic information will be posted at the entrance to all stores as well as online.
