Whole Foods has signed leases to establish its Northeast headquarters and open a downtown store in Jersey City

Whole Foods Market is planning to establish its Northeast headquarters in Jersey City, N.J., as well as open a store location in the city’s downtown, according to the first-quarter 2019 results of Mack-Cali Realty Corp.

In reporting its results for the quarter, Jersey City-based Mack-Cali noted among its highlights that it had “[e]xecuted two Waterfront leases with Whole Foods Market totaling 94,940 [square feet.] The Amazon-owned grocer will open a 47,542 [square-foot] retail location in downtown Jersey City and signed a 47,398 [square-foot] lease for its new Northeast [h]eadquarters.”

Added Mack-Cali CEO Michael J. DeMarco: “We have started 2019 on solid footing, securing Whole Foods Market in both our retail and office space at our signature Harborside center as part of our Waterfront Strategy.”

When reached for comment by Progressive GrocerNicole Wescoe, president of the Northeast region at Whole Foods, responded: "We’re really excited to move our Northeast regional office to Jersey City later this year. Located right on the waterfront, with a variety of on-site amenities and numerous retail, dining and transportation options in the surrounding area, the new office will offer our team members much more than a workspace. We’ll also be opening our first Whole Foods Market in Jersey City, which will be located just a few blocks from the new Northeast regional office. We can’t wait to join the vibrant Jersey City community and look forward to providing our neighbors with the highest-quality food and service.”

Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods is No. 8 on Progressive Grocer’s 2018 Super 50 list of Progressive Grocer’s top grocers in the United States under its parent company, Seattle-based Amazon.
