Weis Markets to Open 'Replacement' Superstore

SUNBURY, Pa. - Weis Markets will open a new 54,244-square-foot replacement superstore in Pennsburg, Pa. Saturday, November 13, replacing a nearby 33,841-square-foot unit, which will close at the end of business day Friday, November 12. This new replacement unit is part of the company's ongoing efforts to convert the majority of its stores to its superstore format.

"Montgomery County has been growing, so we needed the store to grow with it," Weis spokesman Dennis V. Curtin told Progressive Grocer.

"Our new superstore incorporates our latest store design, which is both innovative and functional," said Jonathan Weis, Weis Markets' vice chairman. "Our new replacement store has significantly larger perishables departments, a center store with compelling variety and a customer-friendly checkout with four self-scan lanes."

Weis Markets' new Pennsburg superstore contains:

-- A full-service delicatessen with a brick oven pizza operation and a made-to-order sandwich station. The deli, which has an express register, also includes a sushi counter, an olive bar and offers a wide-selection of home meal solutions.
-- A 600 plus-item produce department, of which 60 are organic.
-- A much-enlarged organic and natural food grocery section.
-- An expanded health and beauty department.
-- A larger pet supply department.
-- A larger bakery featuring more items baked on-site
-- A service meat case featuring Certified Angus Beef and Weis USDA Choice Beef.
-- A service seafood case.

"Many of these departments were greatly expanded from the previous store," said Curtin. "The deli, for example, grew from 30 feet to more than 90, and includes a pizza kitchen and a small food court."

In the expanded pet department Weis uses best practices learned from its Superpetz chain of pet stores. "A lot of the merchandising practices we’ve learned from the Pet Superstore we put into practice in our pet aisles," said Curtin.

As part of the Grand Opening Celebration, Weis Markets will donate $1000 to the Open Line Food Bank of Pennsburg and $1000 to the Pennsburg Fire Department.

Weis also plans to open two additional “replacement” stores early next year. One, a 65,000 square foot store in Bloomsburg – which is currently open – will have its grand opening in mid-December, and a 42,000 square foot store will open in Mifflinburg during the first quarter of 2005.

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets currently operates 157 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. It also owns SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore chain with 33 locations in 11 states.
