Weis Markets Names Three District Managers; Launches Month-Long Fight Hunger Food Drive

Weis Markets, Inc. has named three district managers to oversee its stores in western Maryland and West Virginia, Northeast and Central Pennsylvania, and Binghamton, N.Y., where the company recently acquired 11 stores in the Empire State’s Broome County.

Mike Neal, the regional retailer’s former district manager in northeast and central Pennsylvania, will become the district manager for the company’s recently acquired stores in Binghamton, Endicott and Johnson City, N.Y.

During his Weis Markets career, Neal has worked as a department manager, store manager and district manager. Earlier in his career, he worked for Laneco, a former Lehigh Valley, Pa., food retailer.

Succeeding Neal is Brian McAfee, who will oversee 17 stores, including units in the Wilkes-Barre, Bloomsburg and Sunbury, Pa., areas. McAfee, who joined Weis Markets in March, previously worked for Price Chopper, where he managed stores in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre region.

Dave Fisher, meanwhile, has also been promoted to district manager and will oversee 16 stores in western Maryland and West Virginia, including units in Frederick, Hagerstown and Martinsburg. Prior to his promotion, Fisher was a center store specialist, and has also worked as a department head and store manager.

In other news, Weis Markets is launching its second annual Fight Hunger Food Drive, a month-long, chain-wide program offering customers an opportunity to donate shelf-stable products to local food banks and emergency food providers. The program kicked off this week and will run through the end of September.

“September is Hunger Action month and an important time for food banks as they prepare for the winter months,” said David Hepfinger, president and CEO of the Sunbury, Pa.-based chain. “During these difficult economic times, there has been a significant increase in food bank demand in the areas we serve. We can help. Our Fight Hunger Food Drive gives our associates and customers the opportunity to support 11 food banks and the hundreds of emergency food providers they serve. In addition, our company will be donating $200,000 to these food banks at the end of the campaign.”

New this year is the availability of $3, $5 and $10 vouchers, which can be purchased at each cash register. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be given to area food banks in the form of gift card donations so they can easily fill in any gaps in their food supplies. A new, convenient pre-filled Fight Hunger Donation Bag will also be available at stores, containing pasta, sauce, fruit, vegetables, tuna, cereal and soup -- all for less than $7.

After customers purchase the foods they would like to donate, they can simply place the items in a specially marked collection cart near checkout. Donors will be invited to place a “Fight Hunger” sticker on each store’s front window poster.
