Weis Introduces 'Little Ones' Program

Weis Markets has launched the “Weis Little Ones” program, which allows customers to donate diapers, wipes and other baby care products to infants and families in need throughout the Sunbury, Pa.-based grocer’s market area. The program runs through Nov. 27.

The program also permits customers to make monetary donations by purchasing $1, $3 and $5 vouchers. Weis Markets will match shopper donations, which will then be used to buy Huggies diapers as part of the Kimberly-Clark brand’s “Every Little Bottom” program. All donations will go to area food banks who have agreed to distribute baby care items.

“Many families are struggling to make ends meet,” noted Weis Markets director of lifestyle initiatives Karen Buch. “In fact, according to a recent study, one in three moms does not have enough diapers or other basic baby supplies to take care of her baby. This is a particularly challenging issue. While parents in financial need may be eligible to apply for government funds through WIC or SNAP to offset food and formula costs, these supplemental funds cannot be used to purchase the other essential infant care items. With the support of our customers, we help will local food banks meet this critical need.”

Huggies “Every Little Bottom” study of 2,000 moms in the United States and Canada found that families who can’t afford enough diapers miss school and work more often, or they keep their babies out of day care, which usually requires parents or guardians to provide a day’s supply of diapers. Diaper need results in babies' being left in dirty diapers for longer periods, or wearing washed disposable diapers, which can cause irritation and severe diaper rash.

Besides Huggies, additional major Weis Little Ones sponsors include Johnson's, Weis Bear Essentials and Aveno Baby. Over the course of the program, customers can buy diapers, wipes, lotions, rattles or other toys, shampoos, teethers, baby detergent, and bibs or burp clothes for placement in designated donation carts.
