Wegmans Teaming With Instacart

Wegmans Food Markets has joined forces with Instacart, offering the grocery delivery service in Alexandria, Dulles, Fairfax, Lake Manassas, Leesburg and Potomac, Va., with plans to expand availability to Maryland, the Boston area, southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, according to the Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer’s website.

“Wegmans is known to be one of the highest-quality grocers and, as such, they typically do everything in-house,” Nilam Ganenthiran, chief business officer at San Francisco-based Instacart, told Recode, part of Vox Media. “So we are very grateful and proud.”

The grocer's customers can order their groceries through the grocer’s site or Instacart’s app. According to Recode, Wegmans is charging more per product through the service than it does in its brick-and-mortar stores.

Addressing this issue, the grocer explained on its site: “Wegmans has Consistent Low Prices on items your family buys the most. We add a small price increase to cover the cost of shopping your order. In addition, a delivery fee covers the cost of having your favorite Wegmans products delivered to your door. Enter your Wegmans Shoppers Club number to receive any discounts for the lowest prices available.”

Currently in about 65 markets, Instacart is on track to expand to more than 100 markets by the end of 2017, Ganenthiran told Recode.
