Wegmans to Open 71st Unit in Cherry Hill, N.J.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here is preparing to open its 71st store on Sunday, June 11, at the site of the former Garden State Race Track in Cherry Hill, N.J. In typical Wegmans fashion, the expansive store measures 125,000 square feet, and contains such amenities as a Market Café with the capacity to seat 200.

More than 600 employees, most of whom haven't worked for the company before, have been readying their skills over the past weeks and months, with much of their training being conducted at Wegmans' Mt. Laurel, N.J. store, which opened in March 2006. Taking the reins as store manager at the new unit is 15-year Wegmans veteran Joe Sofia, the company said.

Besides the outsized café, store features include 700 produce items on any given day; artisan breads and rolls baked in a wood-fired brick oven; fresh seafood delivered daily; a meat department with ready-to-cook entrees; a Nature's Marketplace section with organic and natural foods, supplements, and products for special dietary needs; international foods representing such cuisines as Indian, Caribbean, and Eastern Mediterranean; a cheese shop with over 500 varieties of specialty and imported cheeses; a kosher deli; and a full assortment of Wegmans brand products.

Shortly before 7 a.m. on opening day, associates will gather near the store entrance for the traditional Wegmans cheer, with early-arriving customers invited to join in.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 70 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
