Wegmans Honored as EPA Safer Choice Retailer

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Wegmans Food Markets as an outstanding Safer Choice Retailer. For the second consecutive year, the Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer was honored for raising awareness of  EPA's Safer Choice program and offering private label cleaning products and national-brand items meeting Safer Choice standards.

Wegmans Category Merchant Dave Tantillo, Sustainability Manager Jason Wadsworth and Wegmans Brand Product Manager Juan Sanchez accepted the award, which was presented May 9.

“Our goal is to offer effective cleaning products that are Safer Choice-certified whenever possible, because we believe it’s the right thing to do,” said Tantillo. “Safer Choice is the seal of approval we want our customers to become familiar with, understand, and trust as products that are safer for their families and the environment.”

EPA’s Partner of the Year Awards recognize companies for their work in championing safer chemistry and products. To qualify for the Safer Choice label, a product must meet EPA’s Safer Choice Standard, which includes stringent human and environmental health criteria.

The only other retailer to the receive the award was Albertsons, which also carries cleaning products that adhere to Safer Choice standards.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, family-owned Wegmans operates 88 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.
