UNFI Appoints Ex-Whole Foods Prez to Board

DAYVILLE, Conn. -- United Natural Foods, Inc here has appointed health food industry veteran Peter Roy to the company's board of directors. Roy, who joins the board as an independent director, has spent over 30 years in the natural products and healthy lifestyle industries.

"Peter has a wealth of experience and significant business relationships in the healthy lifestyles," said UNFI president and c.e.o. Michael Funk in a statement.

His appointment raises the total number of company directors to eight, including six independent directors.

Roy began his career in the natural products industry in 1975, when he got a job at a New Orleans Whole Food Co. retail store. In 1978 he became president of Whole Food Co., which was acquired by Whole Foods Market in 1988. From 1993 to 1998 Roy was president of Whole Foods Market and, for five years before that, president of the company's West Coast Region.

Since 1999, Roy has been a strategic adviser to North Castle Partners, a private equity fund focused exclusively on investments in consumer-driven product and service businesses that benefit from healthy living trends. As part of this position, he served on the boards of Avalon Natural Products and Naked Juice Co.

In addition, Roy currently serves on the board of directors of Traditional Medicinals, Inc, a manufacturer and marketer of clinically tested herbal teas for the dietary supplement market in the United States and the natural health product market in Canada.

He also recently co-wrote with Jim Autry "The Book of Hard Choices: How to Make the Right Decisions at Work and Keep Your Self-Respect."

UNFI, which carries and distributes over 40,000 products to more than 18,000 customers across the country, serves a wide variety of retail formats including conventional supermarket chains, natural product superstores, independent retail operators, and the foodservice channel.
