Trader Joe's Leases Two Atlanta-area Stores: Report

MONROVIA, Calif. -- It's apparently official: Trader Joe's, based here, is entering the Atlanta market via two leased stores in Midtown and Sandy Springs. It would be the retailer's southernmost territory to date.

The stores could be the first of up to a dozen locations the specialty food retailer may open in metro Atlanta, according to a report in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The quirky limited-assortment chain has signed leases for two 12,000-square-foot stores, according to people close to the lease negotiations who spoke to the newspaper. Meanwhile Trader Joe's is negotiating leases on two other stores, in Buckhead and East Cobb, and could consider a total of 12 stores in the attractive yet competitive metro Atlanta market, those sources said.

Trader Joe's reach at present extends only as far south as Virginia. Other regions the retailer has entered include several Northeastern and New England states, the central Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest.
