Tops Building 1st On-site Fuel Station in Syracuse, N.Y., Area

Tops Markets LLC has begun construction on its first Syracuse, N.Y.-area fueling station site, in Baldwinsville, as part of a larger plan to renovate the site. Construction on the new fueling station, which will be the grocer’s 36th such facility, is expected to be complete in mid-July.

“Not only will shoppers see major changes in the Baldwinsville store, they’ll also be offered additional savings by filling up at the pump,” said Frank Curci, president and CEO of Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops.

Customers who shop at the renovated Baldwinsville location will be able to redeem their fuel rewards points at the pump through Tops Markets’ “Gas BonusPoints” program. By using their BonusCard at nearby Tops locations, customers will accumulate points on qualifying purchases, earning one Gas BonusPoint for every dollar they spend, and can keep track of amassed points by checking the bottom of the receipt. Every $100 a customer spends equals 10 cents off per gallon of Tops gasoline. To redeem the points, customers scan their BonusCards at a Tops gas pump. The savings can be 10, 20, 30 cents or more off per gallon.

The new fueling facility will feature four double-sided self-service fuel dispensers offering three grades of high-quality gasoline: regular, mid-grade and premium. Customers will be able either to pay at the pump with a major credit card or at a walk-in kiosk by the fuel pumps. For extra convenience, customers will also be able to buy snacks; beverages; New York state lottery instant and online games; automotive maintenance items such as windshield wiper fluid and motor oil; local and national newspapers; and other seasonal items at the kiosk.

The $3.5 million overall renovation at the Baldwinsville Tops, which includes the fuel station began in February. The 50,000-square-foot in-store remodel encompasses a new storefront, improvements to the store’s parking lot, a renovated lobby and enhanced décor throughout.

Additional new features will include a bulk foods department, health and beauty and natural and organic sections, and full-service meat and seafood departments, as well as upgrades to the floral, bakery and dairy/frozen departments, and an enhanced Tops’ Carry Out Café, where customers can purchase prepared foods.

“The changes in-store will focus on easier navigation, an even wider variety of products, exceptional value and an overall enhanced shopping experience at a beautifully renovated facility,” said Baldwinsville store manager Mike Mastrogiovanni.

The Baldwinsville Tops is open 24 hours, and the fueling facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The store is remaining open throughout the entire renovation.

Tops operates 134 full-service supermarkets – 129 company-owned and five franchise locations – in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, and employs more than 14,000 associates.
