That’s an Awful Lot of Bananas

Chiquita Brands International Inc. recently helped celebrate what is thought to be the world’s largest banana display. More than 70,000 pounds of Chiquita Bananas from 1,776 boxes and 37 pallets made up the impressive display at Firelake Discount Foods in Shawnee, Okla., surpassing what’s believed to be a record set in 2009 of 66,000 pounds of bananas within a single store display.

“Not only did consumers in the Shawnee area participate in making history … but they also got a great deal on premium, fresh Chiquita bananas,” “said Chris Dugan, VP of sales for North America at Cincinnati-based Chiquita.

To mark the momentous occasion in style, brand ambassadress Miss Chiquita Banana came in person on Sept. 7 to distribute free items to customers, who also received a special deal during the promotion of 5 pounds of Chiquita Bananas for $1.

“Chiquita has been a great partner in creating this event,” said Randy Arceneaux, president and CEO of Affiliated Foods, pictured  above left along with Miss Chiquita, Store Director Richard Driskell and Chiquita Regional Customer Manager Jim Warken. “It was great to have Miss Chiquita participate in our record-setting event today, and I have no doubt that our customers will be enjoying lots of nutritious Chiquita bananas this week. We at Affiliated Foods are excited and proud of our member Firelake supermarket for thinking outside the box to drive sales and continue to help differentiate the independent operator in the marketplace.”

The display will remain in place for viewing during normal business hours until Sept. 11.
