Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover Still Full of Healthy Ideas

Now through Jan. 31, customers at the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC and Giant Food of Landover, Md., who buy any 10 Healthy Ideas products in a single transaction using a Stop & Shop card, will automatically be entered into the Ahold USA banners' Healthy New Year Free Produce for a Year sweepstakes.

Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover's exclusive Healthy Ideas blue-and-green product labeling system helps customers find better-for-you options in the store. To receive the Healthy Ideas designation, a product must meet certain dietitian-developed criteria in terms of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and sugar amounts. Except for avocados and coconuts, most fresh produce items qualify as Healthy Ideas products.

“We strive to make shopping for healthy foods easy,” noted Julie Menounos, in-store nutritionist for Stop & Shop New England Division in Quincy, Mass. “With our Healthy Ideas shelf and product labeling system, customers can find truly healthy foods. With a little planning, families can create shopping lists together and gather recipes, coupons and inspiration from our quarterly Healthy Ideas Magazine and weekly circular.”

"Through partnerships and in-store programs such as Healthy Ideas shelf tags and store tours, we're committed to providing tools and tips to make healthier choices easier choices."

The chains also offer Kid Healthy Ideas, a free 12-page health-and-wellness magazine geared toward children ages 8 to 12 and featuring health-related educational articles, games and recipes written by nutritionists, associates and community health partners.

Additionally, Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover, in partnership with Chicago-based Field Trip Factory, will once more hold free Kid Healthy Ideas store tours, enabling teachers, parents, and troop leaders to teach children about making healthier lifestyle choices in a fun and interactive way. Last year, Stop & Shop hosted more than 1,600 tours in participating stores, reaching 29,500 kids, while Giant-Lanover ran almost 500 tours for more than 8,700 youngsters,

Stop & Shop employs about 62,000 associates and operates more than 400 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey.

Giant-Landover runs170 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, employing about 22,000 associates.
