For Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash, supporting the men and women of the armed forces comes naturally.
“As the leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. commissaries throughout the world, SpartanNash is also deeply committed to serving our military heroes,” notes Meredith Gremel, the company’s VP, corporate affairs and communications, as well as executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation. “Patriotism is one of our core values. As a veteran-friendly employer, we have more than 700 veteran associates. Twenty-nine percent of our military division has served or has a family member who serves/served.”
As a result, the company participates in a number of programs with a distinctly military theme.
“Throughout the year, the company hosts Memorial Day, Fourth of July, 9-11 and Veterans Day events at all of its locations; includes flag ceremonies at its retail stores; [and offers] store promotions and discounts for active duty, Reserves, Guardsmen and veterans,” says Gremel. “Our retail stores also collect worn and torn American flags for proper retirement.”
Further, as part of SpartanNash’s regular checkout donation programs, its “retail campaign to support our military heroes was the foundation’s most successful company-wide retail fundraising effort to date, raising $300,000 on behalf of Give an Hour and Honor and Remember,” she recounts.
