SpartanNash Gives Local Community a 'Helping Hand'

Associates working at SpartanNash's offices in Edina, Minn., will volunteer their time to local nonprofits and community service organizations through the company's "Helping Hands in the Community" program.

First launched in 2011, the program has banked more than 4,000 volunteer hours for projects such as home repairs, food bank stocking, food service and delivery, and mentoring.

SpartanNash’s Minneapolis-based NFC Foundation also has provided each organization with grant funding over the past several years, totaling more than $2.2 million.

“Helping Hands in the Community is a win: win event that our associates love," said Kathy Mahoney, executive VP general counsel and secretary for SpartanNash, and chair of the NFC Foundation. "We are able to step away from our day jobs and experience how the NFC Foundation’s funding impacts so many families."

Mahoney continued: "It’s one thing to say we donated a grant to help feed the hungry; it’s extremely powerful to be on the serving line or stocking the food pantry’s shelf with your co-workers and community partners.  Our actions also embrace every one of our core values and advance our commitment and culture of giving back to our communities." 

This year's Helping Hands in the Community partner agencies include Matter; Loaves and Fishes; Fisher House Foundation; Neighbors; Special Olympics of Minnesota; Bridge for Youth; Keystone Community Services; Perspectives Family Center; Sojourner Project, Inc.; Dakota Woodlands Shelter; Casa De Esperanza; Catholic Charities; Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative; and Neighborhood House.
