Spartan Stores Cuts 70 Administrative Jobs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - As part of its ongoing cost reduction efforts, Spartan Stores, Inc. on Friday announced that it has eliminated approximately 70 administrative staff positions at its office in Grand Rapids, Mich. The company said it expects the move to lower operating costs by approximately $4.0 million annually.

"Lowering our operating costs has been a top priority, and we continue to take the steps necessary to strengthen our competitive market position and build on the positive financial momentum we have experienced during the last several quarters," said Spartan Stores' chairman, president and c.e.o., Craig C. Sturken. "Today's grocery industry is extremely competitive, and we must maintain an efficient operation to ensure a successful long-term future. Although we regret having to make these difficult decisions, we are firmly committed to achieving our objective of bringing our operating costs into alignment with industry standards."

Spartan Stores Inc. is the nation's ninth largest grocery distributor with warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich. The company distributes more than 40,000 private label and national brand products to 330 independent grocery stores in Michigan. Spartan Stores also owns and operates 54 retail supermarkets and 21 deep-discount drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Ashcraft's Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, Great Day Food Centers, Prevo's Family Markets and The Pharm.
