Shop 'n Save, Foodtown Deploy Biometric Loyalty Program with Card Option
PITTSBURGH and AVENEL, N.J. -- Supervalu-owned Shop 'n Save and regional chain Foodtown said they plan to deploy a biometric loyalty solution that also has a card-based option to facilitate rapid consumer adoption and provide options for those shoppers who aren't yet ready to provide their fingerprints.
The two retailers said they will install the biometric SmartShop program from San Francisco-based Pay by Touch, which allows customers to identify themselves, pay for purchases, and redeem rewards with the touch of a finger.
"The SmartShop service is branded 'Shop 'n Save Personalized Perks' in three of our Pittsburgh-area stores," said Greg Hartley, owner of three Shop 'n Save locations. "The service is a huge hit with our shoppers, with kiosks in each store receiving more than 300 visits a day."
Pay By Touch added a card-based option to its SmartShop service earlier this year to address concerns some shoppers have with being fingerprinted. "At Pay By Touch, we understand that each retailer is unique," said John Rogers, founder, chairman, and c.e.o., Pay By Touch. "Card-based SmartShop enables merchants to immediately engage their best shoppers by letting them use their existing loyalty cards to get personalized offers."
Here's how SmartShop works:
- When shoppers enter the store, they scan their loyalty card at the SmartShop kiosk to get personalized offers based on their purchase history.
- Shoppers receive an 8 1/2 x 11 print-out with 16 customized offers on the products they buy most
- Shoppers scan their loyalty card at check-out to redeem their offers. They don't need to bring the print-out to check-out; no paper coupons are required.
SmartShop gives merchants customer-based metrics and data to help improve the efficacy of marketing efforts.
The system uses a Web-based management system for algorithmic campaign creation and real-time targeting.
