Schnucks Cuts Ribbon on Replacement Store

ST. LOUIS - Schnuck Markets, Inc. here debuted a new supermarket this morning in the Carondelet neighborhood of south St. Louis this morning, replacing the original Loughborough store.

The new Schnucks Loughborough Marketplace, located at 1020 Loughborough Ave., serves as the co-anchor the new Loughborough Commons shopping center along with the city's first Lowe's home improvement warehouse.

Company officials said the previous 53,000-square-foot unit was too small to offer many of the amenities found in other Schnucks stores. "We've added 10,000 square feet of goods and services which we believe will appeal to customers in South City neighborhoods," said Schnucks' president and c.e.o. Scott Schnuck. "Throughout the store, shoppers will immediately notice wider aisles and enhanced lighting. We've also have installed a hot and cold food bar as well as a service meat counter."

Schnuck said the market store format at Loughborough Commons is similar to the regional chain's recently opened units in Cottleville, Eureka and Bridgeton. "The Loughborough Commons store will be the fourth in the St. Louis area in which we have used our new marketplace format," which he said has proven to be very popular with shoppers at its other locations.

The new store, which will employ nearly 400 associates -- approximately 75 more than the original -- is introducing a new Chef's Express Soup line in a new soup kiosk located in the prepared foods section, between the food bar and the deli.

"During the Grand Opening, we will be offering a `Taste the Difference' sampling event to demonstrate our selection of new, all natural, made-from-scratch soups," said store manager Dan Kunz. "The new hot and cold soup display will offer up to 10 different flavors of fresh soups daily. Vegans, or those on low sodium or non-dairy diets for instance, will find something they will like at this unusual bar."

Upon entering the store, customers will immediately experience another new feature via an Old World style floral department that's designed to be reminiscent of a quick trip to a European floral market, said Kunz. The floral department will prominently feature Schnucks Signature Bouquet, which with proper care can retain its beauty for seven days.

Kunz said he and his team are geared up for a strong grand opening sales week, including the Labor Day weekend. "I'm at the new store each day overseeing all the details that will help make our Grand Opening a special day throughout the neighborhood," Kunz said. "Our long-time customers are excited about the changes in store for them, and our entire store team is geared up and anxious to welcome them and to meet new customers in the coming weeks."

In addition to the Loughborough store, Schnucks also operates seven other stores in St. Louis City.

Schnuck Markets, Inc. operates 102 stores (including five Logli stores) and 99 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi and Iowa.
