Save-A-Lot Seeking 'Road Scholar' Interns

Save-A-Lot, Supervalu’s hard-discount, limited-assortment grocery chain, is seeking a team of two interns to serve as brand ambassadors -- dubbed “Road Scholars” by the banner -- for its 2012 Fuel Your Family Road Trip campaign.

The winners of the nationwide search will embark at the end of next month on a four-week tour to 12 U.S. cities to publicize the brand and help show consumers how St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot can offer families fresh, quality food and easy meal ideas at savings of up to 40 percent, compared with traditional grocery stores.

During the tour, the Road Scholars will show up at community events, conduct sampling sessions, emcee customer appreciation events at Save-A-Lot locations, and offer advice on affordable, easy road trip snacks, and breakfast and lunch ideas.

As part of the hunt for this year’s Road Scholars, teams of two can submit resumes, writing samples and a 90-second-or-under audition video explaining why they should get the internship. Videos will be judged for their originality, creativity and poise, in addition to applicants’ ability to create social media buzz for their clips. Candidates must be college graduates or enrolled in an accredited college and possess solid communications, social media and interpersonal skills.

Further information about the application requirements and process, along with a complete job description, can be found online, while specific questions should be directed to [email protected].

The internship will last from July 23 to Aug. 31, with the chosen Road Scholars receiving a weekly salary, a per diem and important job experience. This year’s Fuel Your Family Road Trip route will include stops in Florida; Georgia; South Carolina; North Carolina; Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Maryland; and New York.

Last year’s road trip team of Abby Tinberg and Bob Ringer visited 10 U.S. cities, bringing the Save-A-Lot brand to more than a half-million consumers along the way.

Save-A-Lot, a wholly owned subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, operates more than 1,300 stores in 39 states.
