Save-A-Lot Bows Atlantic City Store

Hard-discount, limited-assortment grocery chain Save-A-Lot, a wholly owned subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, opened its first store in Atlantic City, N.J., on May 17, becoming the first full-service supermarket within a 21-mile radius of the city.

On hand for the grand-opening ceremony were Mayor Lorenzo T. Langford and other local officials, including John Palmieri, executive director of Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CDRA), who helped make the store possible. At the event, the St. Louis-based banner made a $1,000 donation to the St. James AME Church Food Pantry.

“I … welcome the opportunity for residents to be able to conveniently shop for groceries,” said Langford, while according to Palmieri, “The addition of Save-A-Lot … gives the residents of Atlantic City access to affordable, healthy foods.”

Save-A-Lot is committed to offering fresh produce, dairy and USDA-inspected meat, as well as other essential grocery and household items to shoppers at an affordable price -- typically up to 40 percent less than traditional grocery stores,” noted Save-A-Lot regional director Bob Sheehy.

Each Save-A-Lot store carries a 1,200 to 1,500 of the most popular everyday grocery essentials, including the private brands Save-A-Lot Today, Coburn Farms and Tipton Grove. The banner’s stores average about 15,000 square feet.

The Atlantic City store is the 11th Save-A-Lot store in New Jersey. The banner, which operates more than 1,300 stores in 39 states, employs about 240 associates in the Garden State.
