Ralphs Opens First Supermarket in Downtown L.A. in Over 50 Years

LOS ANGELES - Kroger-owned Ralphs Grocery Co. today opened its first supermarket in the Downtown Los Angeles area in more than 50 years.

The opening of the new 50,000 square-foot Downtown Ralphs Fresh Fare marks Ralphs' return to downtown Los Angeles. The retailer was founded in 1873 with a single store just blocks from the new store. Its last downtown store closed in 1950.

"We hope the opening of our new downtown supermarket will provide an impetus for further residential and business development in the area," said Dave Hirz, president of
Ralphs. "This store is designed to be a one-stop shopping experience. We believe it has everything a shopper could possibly want in a supermarket."

The Downtown Ralphs will offer an expanded grocery, liquor, and produce/floral departments, along with a variety of specialty service departments. Other features include a wide selection of fresh and organic produce, a fully staffed meat and seafood department, bakery with fresh-baked breads and gourmet desserts, and a wine cellar with a selection of premium wines, spirits, and champagnes.

For customers on the go, the new store offers fresh sushi, a salad bar, a soup bar, and an extensive selection of ready-to-eat and heat-and-serve items. The store also has an enhanced service delicatessen where shoppers will find an array of delicious entrees and side dishes that are prepared fresh daily and ready for takeout.

The Downtown Ralphs will also have a catering service that can arrange everything from floral decorations to deli and seafood platters to custom decorated cakes.

Other features include a full-service Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf mini-cafe, a full-service pharmacy, and an in-store dry cleaning service.

Ralphs operates more than 450 conventional and warehouse-style supermarkets under the Ralphs and Food 4 Less banners in Southern California, Nevada, Illinois, and Indiana; and Ralphs, Cala Foods, Bell Markets, and Foods Co in Northern California, from its headquarters in Los Angeles.
