PRIVATE LABEL: Supervalu Employees Create Their Own Ice Cream Flavors

Three Supervalu associates won the opportunity to introduce their personal ice cream concoctions to the public, courtesy of the Minneapolis-based grocer’s employee Stone Ridge Creamery Name Your Dream Flavor Sweepstakes. As well as receiving free ice cream for a year and a $500 gift card each, the winning associates had their flavors added to Supervalu’s private label Stone Ridge Creamery collection, which offers 40 other varieties of full-fat, light and 100-calorie ice creams, sherbets and tart frozen yogurts. Additionally, the packaging of each new flavor displays an image of its creator.

The winners are Tom Lindberg, retail technology specialist for the company’s supply chain services northern region in Minneapolis, for “Twisted Pretzel,” which features sea salt-infused caramel and crunchy dark chocolate-coated pretzel pieces in vanilla ice cream; Amy Youngblood, senior business support specialist at the innovation center in Minneapolis, for the innovative “Red Velvet Cake,” a deep-red ice cream combining chocolate and cream cheese frosting; and Joe Agrusa, direct store delivery receiver at the Albertsons in Chula Vista, Calif., for “Italian Kiss,” a blend of chocolate ice cream, hazelnut and dark chocolate chunks.

All three flavors are available nationwide in 32-ounce cartons retailing for a suggested $3.99 each at such Supervalu banners as Acme, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s/Star Market, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, in addition to select independent grocery retailers affiliated with the company. According to the grocer, Stone Ridge Creamery products retail at a price 10 percent to 15 percent lower than comparable premium national brands. Assortments change annually according to top flavor trends.

Last year, Supervalu invited associates across the United States to enter their “dream” ice cream flavors in the contest. The company picked the winning flavors from almost 1,500 submissions.

“Supervalu associates’ interest in, and support for, our new Stone Ridge Creamery brand helped us exceed our sales goals for the brand last year,” said Stone Ridge Creamery brand manager Stacy Bergmann. “The sweepstakes was our way of recognizing and thanking our associates for the contributions they made to the brand’s growth.”

Among Supervalu’s other private label brands are Baby Basics, Wild Harvest, Culinary Circle, Stockman & Dakota, Java Delight, homelife, Equaline, Shoppers Value and WholeCare Pet.
