Price Chopper Bows State-of-the-art Supermarket in Upstate N.Y.

Price Chopper’s newest store, in Chenango Bridge, N.Y., opened this week with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by such notables as Golub Corp. chairman and CEO Neil Golub, president and COO Jerry Golub Sr., and other company officials, in addition to political and civic leaders, and, of course, shoppers.

“We are so pleased to offer a brand new, state-of-the-art supermarket here in Chenango that contains many of our signature products and services, with a special focus on many products that are produced right here in this area” noted Neil Golub.

The 60,000-square-foot store was designed to attain silver-level certification in the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. "We focused our sustainable efforts to make the shopping experience as pleasurable as possible, while reducing our utility consumption and thereby better controlling costs at the consumer level," explained Jerry Golub.

Sustainable features include precast concrete walls that reduced construction waste and skylights incorporated into the roof to allow for natural light to flood the store. Sensors detect when or if electric lighting is needed to augment natural light. Freezers and cases are illuminated with LED bulbs, which consume less energy and last longer than conventional fluorescent bulbs. Glass doors in these departments help to keep the cold air in, saving energy and keeping the aisle temperature comfortable for shoppers.

A traditional night-before-the-opening “Preview Party” held by Price Chopper raised more than $3,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Binghamton, the South Central New York Region American Red Cross and the Chenango SPCA. Attendees paid $5 each to sample hot and cold buffet stations throughout the store and enjoy on-site entertainment. All proceeds, along with a match of $1,500 from the grocer, were split among the three beneficiaries.

Opening day festivities included a Boar’s Head lunch special -- a hot dog, chips and beverage for $3 -- with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the American Civic Association Memorial Park.

In addition to a quality selection of groceries including an expanded variety of dairy, beer, gluten free, natural and organic products, household goods and locally produced and manufactured products, the new Chenango Price Chopper will offer:

Among the store offering are fresh custom-cut and self-service meats, more than 500 varieties of fresh organic and conventional fruit and vegetables sourced locally and around the world, a full-service seafood department, a full-service deli with Boars Head and Price Chopper brand premium meats and cheeses, the Market Center Café dining area, daily-baked artisan breads, the Central Market Classic “Decadent Dessert” program, and a Central Market Florist department.

Schenectady, N.Y.-based Golub Corp. owns and operates 128 Price Chopper supermarkets in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Golub’s more than 24,000 associates collectively own 52 percent of the company’s privately held stock, making it one of the nation’s largest privately held corporations that is predominantly employee-owned.
