PMA Readies for Michigan Traceability Symposium

The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) will host its first-ever Traceability Symposium Aug. 10 in Grand Rapids, Mich., at the J.W. Marriott Grand Rapids.

The day-long regional symposium will feature traceability experts who will explore the new vision for the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI), as well as next steps needed to turn that vision into reality and dispel misconceptions about the industry-wide plan.

Presented in partnership with Superior Sales, Inc., along with presenting sponsor N2N Global and participating sponsors Avery Dennison; FasCor, Inc.; HarvestMark; iGPS; Lowry Computers; and Virtual One Software, the symposium will offer an engaging, interactive format focused on creating awareness of the risks to companies, commodity markets and the industry in general that are associated with the current lack of an external traceability capability.

“Given recent changes to the PTI, this educational event is critical to understanding what the future of traceability is and what it is not,” said Brian LaForest, grape and tree fruit sales director for Hudsonville, Mich.-based Superior Sales, Inc. “We think executives from across the supply chain will find great value in hearing firsthand from growers about their successful experiences to minimize the scope of recalls and improve business efficiencies.”

Featured speakers include PMA’s traceability expert, Ed Treacy, VP of supply chain efficiencies; representatives from the Food and Drug Administration; GS1 US; and US Foodservice. Attendees will also hear perspectives on traceability and PTI from a retail panelist.

“Many misconceptions and myths about enhanced traceability and the PTI are floating around the industry,” said Treacy. “We will offer the latest facts and information, and help attendees understand the hazards of waiting. The reality is that chainwide, electronic traceability is coming, and it is in our industry’s best interest to direct our future,” rather than the other way around.

Attendees will participate in interactive discussions and planning that will help outline steps to achieve PTI milestones and leverage PTI to increase business efficiencies and profitability. Attendees will also have ready access to speakers — and have a chance to interact with their fellow colleagues in attendance — during the event’s networking breakfast, lunch and sponsor demonstration time.

Newark, Del.-based PMA is also planning to host similar regional events later this year in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Florida.
