Peapod by Giant Expands to Baltimore

CHICAGO - Leading Internet grocer Peapod, LLC, and Giant Food, both divisions of Ahold, yesterday announced the expansion of their online ordering and delivery service to the Baltimore area, with delivery set to begin Aug. 17.

Peapod by Giant, which picks its orders from a warehouse in Gaithersburg, Md., will now reach residents in communities such as Owings Mills, Garrison, Pikesville, Hunt Valley, Timonium, Towson, and Mount Washington. In total, these areas represent more than 246,000 households.

Peapod, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary later this year, also offers online service in the Northeast via Stop & Shop, another Ahold banner. A Peapod spokeswoman told Progressive Grocer that its general plans are to eventually "expand all over the Giant/Stop & Shop footprint."

Peapod by Giant offers fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, meat, and dairy, as well as national brands and Giant private label items. Shoppers can create personal lists, read nutrition information online, sort products by price or by nutrition criteria, and take advantage of personalized online coupons. Giant cardholders can jump-start their first online shopping excursion from a list of items they've bought at their local Giant Food, simply by entering their card number online. Groceries can be delivered as soon as the next day after the order is placed.

"Giant Food is very happy to be aligned with Peapod to give our customers in Baltimore what they have been asking for -- a good, quality delivery service," said Bill Holmes, general manager of Giant Food, in a statement.

"Peapod by Giant is excited to serve customers in Baltimore," added Peapod c.e.o. Marc van Gelder. "As always, we will strive to provide a wide selection of well-priced, top-quality fresh products with the ease of Internet shopping and home delivery."

Peapod by Giant began serving the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in 2000. Its current delivery areas include Fairfax County, Va. and Montgomery County, Md.
